Grants

Metro is proud to provide funds for local projects that help create livable communities. Find information about Metro grant opportunities for topics of particular interest to you.

In our region, there is no shortage of innovative and compelling ideas to help make this a great place to live, work and play. Metro is proud to inspire real change by awarding grants to support hundreds of improvement projects – large and small – around the region.

Where does Metro get the money?

In some cases, Metro collects a surcharge on regional solid waste services and redistributes it through competitive application processes. Community groups use Metro grant awards to enhance neighborhoods and restore nature in the urban area.

Metro also is a pass-through grantmaker, managing the flow of all federal transportation planning funds into our region, allocating funds for priority projects. In other instances, Metro redistributes millions of dollars collected from local bond measures to protect the region’s natural areas, safeguard its water quality and preserve its fish and wildlife habitat.

Sauvie Island Center field trip

Field trips to a working farm yield results

For hundreds of North Portland schoolchildren, lessons learned in the fields at Sauvie Island Center about food, farming and the land are as fresh as leafy greens, as crisp as carrots, and as surprisingly tasty as a turnip or radish. A take-home recipe book brings lessons to life.

Kids dig deep, plant roots in Lents restoration project

Hundreds of local youth and adult volunteers planted 6,000 native trees and shrubs along a quarter-mile stretch of the Springwater Corridor in Lents. To date, 300 cubic yards of concrete, gravel and asphalt has been removed and recycled from the former lumber mill site in outer Southeast Portland.
