Maps and data › Natural hazards program › Geographic Information Systems application
This geographic information system tool can map earthquake, flood, and landslide hazards in the Portland, Ore. metropolitan region. Read the disclaimer and then follow the link to the hazard map tool.
Geographic Information Systems (GIS) data are created and maintained at the Metro Data Resource Center, as well as by other jurisdictions and agencies in the region. Metro acts as a clearinghouse for spatial data - providing a "one stop shopping" approach to accessing regional data. These regional data are known as the Regional Land Information System (RLIS).
This Internet web site demonstrates how geographic information system technology can be used to illustrate the potential vulnerability, in a natural disaster, of people, the built environment and natural resources.
The map data available here combines Metro's Regional Land Information System (RLIS) data as well as other data layers specific to natural hazards. These data layers include earthquake hazard data. Hazard data and their analyses are no substitute for site-specific data collection and analysis. The hazard layers are published by the Oregon Department of Geology and Mineral Industries (DOGAMI).
The hazards data and RLIS Lite data represent "planning level" databases. While adequate for the majority of geographic information system applications, hazards data and RLIS Lite data have various degrees of accuracy and are not based on a tightly controlled geodetic network.
Care should be taken to avoid implying data accuracy by overlaying information of lower accuracy onto data of higher accuracy. For example, although the hazard layers can be mapped with the buildings, existence or non-existence of a hazard condition for a building cannot accurately be determined.
